Week 1 Response
Questions:
1.) How do communities perceive site specific work?
2.) Do the communities have a say as to what pieces go up?
3.) What inspires the artists to create in such environments?
4.) Has an artist inadvertently caused controversy by creating a piece that was negatively received by the audience?
5.) What was special about the locations for the Boulders?
As I went through the reading I discovered how important the coexistence of public life and art is. The communal participation of audience with performance can be very integral to the growth and evolution of societies and communities. Also the importance of site specificity to reinforce the message in which the piece is going to deliver. That's something that stuck with me because it's such a delicate part of the process, ensuring that you raise awareness in a manner that's both accepted by the community in which you are working in, but also in a sense provocative enough to where people begin to have discussions and people begin to ask questions. It's a very fine line.

Yes! Community engaged work is all about balance! The balance between the artist's skills and goals, and the community's needs, resources, skills, and objectives. Let's talk about it more tomorrow!
