Week One Response: One Place After Another
"One Place After Another" by Miwon Kwon follows one creative group. This creative group created a site specific piece in Chicago.
Questions:
1.) What are other artists opinions on site specific projects?
2.) Do the communities enjoy having these projects or do they think of them as a form of graffiti? Do the communities find them disrespectful in some way?
3.) What do the artists look for when creating these projects?
4.) What socially or culturally about the areas creates ideas for the artists?
5.) Has anyone's artwork created more tension between the community rather than bring them together?
Thoughts:
If I were to create a site specific project I think I would ask the people what sort of thing they'd like to see rather assume I know what they want. But then again that sort of takes away an artists own creativity if they just make what they know the people will like rather than what is of the artist's own creation. I like the idea of site specific projects to bring a community together rather than trying to pander to everyone of all different places. By making the art for a single city or community it can bring them together through a unique piece that is theirs. I enjoy the pieces that don't try to shape how people think but more give a perspective they may not have realized. It doesn't try to give people a set idea of how something is but a way of thinking they weren't aware of.

Mason, I appreciate how your questions open up the door into thinking about the ethics and potential power struggles in community-engaged art. I look forward to our dialogue tomorrow!
