From Site to Community

The art installation by Miwon Kwon called “One Place After Another: Site Specific Art and Locational Identity” truly astonished the world.  It not only brought interest to site specific art, but it “broke the mold” of what public art was at that time.  From reading about this art installation five things I took away from it were:
  1. That site specific art has a unique way of connecting people from all different backgrounds and walks of life.
  2. I am still shocked at how they pulled this off without many people seeing it.
  3. I also found it interesting that in the article it talked about how artist felt more “freedom” from working in a “real” place.
  4. Site specific installations truly resonate with me because when I am seeing them I think of how the artist meant for it to be here at this spot at this time.  So much planning goes into this and it is truly magical how it all comes to together.
  5. One thing that did stand out to me was when the article talked about how: “Jacob’s desire to shift the role of the viewer from passive spectator to active art-maker became one of the central goals of ‘Culture in Action’”.  Making the specter an active member of the art is something that has a always fascinated me.
The questions I asked myself when reading this were:
  1. What do artists look for when they are picking their site?
  2. Are there any places that site specific art won’t work?
  3. Do artists just form their site specific art from their own thoughts or do they try and gauge the audience beforehand?
  4. Why do artists choose site specific art over other forms (especially non site specific)?
  5. Are all site specific art installation meant to make a political statement?
  6. What is a site specific art installation’s impact on the community it is in?

  1. Wow, Zach, these are powerful questions! These questions are precisely why I teach this class. I hope we can begin investigating your questions tomorrow.
