Week One - One Place After Another

One Place After Another: Site Specific Art and Locational Identity is a culmination of works presented by Miwon Kwon speaking about the rather recent amendment made in art making practices that have been notated as being ‘site specific.’ Kwon discusses how when artist such as MacDonald and Lacy plan on creating these site specific pieces, they are in tune to create social and cultures bridges across all people for all relationships. With this, Kwon brought to light the important finding that regardless of the location, purpose, or presence something might have, everything is in the face of the public wether it be art, music, math, etc.

Here are some my other thoughts:
How did other “professional”/traditional artists react to this movement, I know there was a mentioning of some “professional” artists involved in this, but were there others who were against this in some manner? Why is it that working with real people tackling real issues is ‘less successful’ than traditional art making practices? Within MacDonald’s ‘new community activism,’ was there any opposition from this within the communities that opposed this ‘enrichment’? How many pieces total came out of this one push done by Lacy? What I thought was rather striking and almost beautiful was when Lacy’s statement as to what  her Culture in Action movement stood for, “what exists in the space between the words public and art is an unknown relationship between artist and audience, a relationship that may itself be the artwork.” Large scale art like this is so beautiful to me, why is it that this Culture in Action movement is not done as much as I think it should be? Looking at artwork in the lens of after the art is made, the space is made to be a “primary function” of the work of art itself instead of the presence of the artwork just then giving the space a function.
